Shopping Overview

Places to shop

Shanghai is a 'shopping paradise'! One of the first things you will notice about Shanghai is how trendy the young people are. Shanghai is famous for its clothing and fashions. Products are of great quality and come for a good price. Nevertheless, in high class boutiques, you will not find bargains.

Places to shop

Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road was the first commercial road in Shanghai. In the early 20th century, there were only four department stores along this stretch. Today, it has become the number one place for shopping in the city. The money at work in the road has encouraged many companies and businesses over the years to set up bases near here. Nanjing Road is fantastically located, stemming off the Huangpu River and the Bund at a right angle and linking the city's main commercial and residential districts to the mouth of the river. The road to the east of Tibet Road is called Nanjing Dong Road while the road to the west is known as Nanjing Xi Road.

In the past few years, mammoth changes have taken place here. The street was beginning to look a little down at heel and Huaihai road was pulling the wealthier customers away from this street. A huge improvement plan was put into action and completed just in time for Chinese New Year 2000. New shopping centers have been erected and a large section of the street has been pedestrianised. There are also some first class hotels scattered along the road including the Peace Hotel , and the Portman . In the evenings, the street looks at its best, with neon lights and advertising billboards illuminating the glorious buildings along the road.

Huaihai Road

Huaihai Road is a charming six-km stretch with almost 400 shops. The most bustling part is from Shanxi Road to Tibet Road. Many Shops on Huaihai Road are built in the architectural styles of different countries. When the night falls, as the lights flash and shine, it truly comes alive. There are also many internationally renowned department stores such as Paris Spring, the Japanese Isetan, Parkson's. It is a highly successful shopping and commercial area incorporating business, finance, culture and tourism.

The Yuyuan Garden

The Yuyuan Garden Market sells gold jewelry, Chinese arts and souvenirs. Shops in this area imitate ancient buildings and temples in Yangtze River Region. The magnificent Yuyuan Garden is eminently worth a visit. Take a look at the jewelry stores and have some of the snacks.

The bird and flower market

The bird and flower market in the Northwest corner of People's Square off Huangpi Road is a great place to soak up some real Shanghai atmosphere. Here you can enjoy some flower shopping, or some souvenir shopping (there are a few souvenir stalls).

Bird keeping is a hobby of elderly Chinese, especially elderly men. After retirement, a small song bird or two can be an excellent companion and something to care for.

Shopping Guides:
