Getting There

Getting Around

Shanghai boasts one of the best transportation systems in China. As a major port city and the largest city in Eastern China, this is the major hub for the eastern region.

The Outer Transportation:

By plane:

There are two airports in Shanghai, Pudong Airport (PVG) and Hongqiao Airport (SHA). International flights depart from and arrive at Pudong Airport. Domestic flights depart from and arrive at both airports. If you need to transfer flights in Shanghai you'd better make sure to depart from and arrive at the same airport (or at least allow enough time to transfer between airports).

Pudong Airport is located 55km away from the city centre, and a taxi should cost approximately RMB150. Hongqiao airport is just 15km from the city centre and a taxi from the CBD should cost approximately RMB30-50.

Magnetic train (Maglev) to Pudong Airport:

Take metro line 2 to Longyang Road and take the Maglev. The train is in operation from 7:00 to 21:00. It takes seven minutes to arrive at the airport and the ticket price is RMB 50. If the passenger holds a valid airplane ticket then the ticket price of the Maglev train will decrease to RMB40.

Tips:
Buses are often packed to the hilt and at times, impossible to board. The closest thing to revolutionary fervor in Shanghai today is the rush-hour bus ambushes. Once on board, keep your valuables tucked away since pick pocketing is easy under such conditions, and foreigners make juicy targets.

Within the city, traveling by bus is not recommended since the buses get very crowded and often get caught in traffic jams. Taxi and metro are your first choices.

By Boat

Generally passengers go to Chongming Island and Zhoushan (where Putuoshan Island is) by boat. In most cases people depart from Shiliupu in Shanghai to reach Zhoushan. However, passengers need to be clear about the departure port, since there are two departure ports; Luchaogang and Jinshan. Passengers to Chongming Island also need to be clear about the boarding place.

Bus

Beijing tourist bus center
Beijing tourist bus center was built on September 20th 2005, with the purpose of getting rid of all the travel traps of tourist special buses which existed previously. Now in the center there are three places of departure:

Tian'an men bus departure center: the southwest corner of Tian'anmen Square
Tian'an men branch center: the southeast of the square
Deshengmen branch center: Deshengmen

Departure time: 6:00am-10:00am (will be slightly adjusted according to the variation of seasons and tourist numbers)

Routes of the tourist buses:
Badaling Great Wall-Dingling RMB 140
Juyongguan Great Wall-Dingling RMB 125
Direct route to Badaling RMB 80

The above ticket prices include attraction ticket price, return bus ticket and dining fee.

Taxi
If it's the first time for you to visit Beijing, you should be notified that the Taxi parking lot is situated in front of the Beijing Railway Station. However, if you would like to go somewhere close to this Railway Station (with the starting fee less than RMB 10), generally, the drivers are not willing to go there, therefore you'd better walk out from the square in front of the Station ,then go ahead and pass one street, and walk to Zhongliang Plaza where you will find a lot of taxis.

Tricycle
Most of the transportation tricycles in Beijing congregate on the communications hub and the tourist hot spot of the city centre. When some festivals or holidays are coming, traffic jams are extremely bad, so the local people prefer to select the tricycle because they can pass through some narrow alleyways to travel. Additionally, it is very convenient to enjoy the street scenery of the tricyles' passage, therefore giving a better value journey than taking a Taxi.

Bicycle
A great deal of hotels in Beijing have set up the business of hiring out bicycles, and generally the rent fee everyday is about RMB 20-30. If you want to be well acquainted with Beijing, you might as well hire out a bicycle, far from new, then you can let yourself go through various kinds of lanes in the centre of the city. Also, with some typical dialects of Beijing being wafted to your ears occasionally, you can get a great pleasure from traveling through Beijing this way.

Tourist Vessel
Additionally, Beijing has opened three sightseeing lines on water.
